At
this time of year we usually discuss the sore back we suffered while shoveling
snow, not how we lost our umbrella at the company Christmas lunch. That’s the
exciting part of life, isn’t it? Not knowing ithe ruby shoes are going to actually
fit until, by some magic happenstance, they are on your feet; not sure of exactly
how to get where you want to go until you understand where you have been and
boy, have you got some stories to tell.
And so, we begin to realize that the journey is what is important, not necessarily
the destination. This journey to the land of OZ is quite an adventure.
I never knew there were so many shades of green or that monkeys do not actually
have to leave the ground to appear to fly. I did know how wonderful all our
members are and how much can be accomplished by a few dedicated (and crazy)
people. My heartfelt thanks to all who are working so unselfishly to make this
amazing story come alive for our audience.
Happy Holidays and the safest of landings. Come on, Toto, we don’t want to be left behind.

We
are now half way through our journey to the Emerald City and on behalf of The
Producers, I would like to congratulate everyone on a great job so far and thank
all the "little elves" who are busy at work preparing things behind
the scenes. We wish everyone a safe and happy holiday and look forward to seeing
you on January 6 as we continue our trek down The Yellow Brick Road.

Wizard of Oz won 2 Academy Awards:
Wizard of Oz did not win Best Picture, called Outstanding Production back then. But 1939 was a banner year for movies, the likes of which we have never seen again. The other nominees in 1939 were: "Dark Victory," "Gone with the Wind," "Goodbye, Mr. Chips," "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington," "Of Mice and Men," and "Stagecoach." "Gone With the Wind" was the 1939 winner.
Wizard of Oz was voted #6 in AFI's 100 Greatest American Movies of All Time. Judy Garland was voted #8 Woman in AFI's 50 Greatest American Screen Legends.
TV made this movie. It did not show a profit or become wildly popular until it hit TV.
Toto's real name was Terry and she was a Cairn Terrier. Only she was paid less than Judy Garland of the major stars. Well, except for the 124 midgets who were the Munchkins. They were paid $50 a week.
The black and white scenes of Kansas were filmed last. This provides contrast to colorful Oz, which is a good thing since the Technicolor cameras had already been moved to the "Gone With the Wind" set.
Bert Lahr, Jack Haley and Ray Bolger had to suck lunch through a straw as they couldn't eat in those costumes.
The Cowardly Lion's tail was worked by technicians on an overhead walkway.
In the movie, the original Tin Man was Buddy Ebsen. When filming began, Buddy learned he was allergic to the aluminium powder used to make the Tin Man look metallic. He was replaced by Jack Haley. Buddy Ebsen wouldn't become really famous again until he appeared on TV as Jed Clampett in the Beverley Hillbillies.

Dorothy: How can you talk if you haven't got a brain?
Scarecrow: I don't know. But some people without brains do an awful lot of talking, don't they?
